#WeekInReview: Full Week Recap of Activities of the Honourable Minister, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani (Vol. 97)

HM Project Bridge Lagos

INTRO

This past week was marked by significant engagements driving forward our Ministry’s mission to strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. From strategic meetings on Project BRIDGE to unveiling high-impact initiatives in partnership with both local and international stakeholders, our focus remained firmly on building a resilient and inclusive digital economy that connects every Nigerian and supports innovation across sectors.

TIMELINE

Monday, August 4 – Advancing Project BRIDGE with International Partners

  • The Honourable Minister’s first official engagement for the week was hosting Wahad Al-Bahar, Director General of the Kuwait Fund in his office, where he pitched Project BRIDGE, our national fibre infrastructure programme to connect every region, state, LGA and ward across Nigeria, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Wednesday, August 6 – Partnerships in AI and Diaspora Engagement

  • Dr. Tijani delivered the keynote address at the Meta Llama Accelerator launch event, where he spoke on the National Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Startup strategy and the significance of our Ministry’s partnership with Meta. Ahead of the event, he had a virtual meeting with Kojo Boakye, Vice President, Public Policy for Africa, Middle East and Turkey, Meta, and Sade Dada, Head of Public Policy, Anglophone West Africa, Meta.
  • He hosted Dr. Bashir Muzakkar, Director General, Kano State Information Technology Development Agency (KASITDA), to discuss areas of support from the Ministry to the Agency. The Honourable Minister is committed to promoting partnerships with subnationals in the areas of innovation and technology for the benefit of all Nigerians no matter where they are located.
  • Next was a meeting with the Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, and other representatives of the university, who visited his office to explore opportunities for collaboration with the foremost tertiary institution in the areas of technology and innovation. Dr. Tijani also received an invitation from the delegation to deliver a lecture at the university later this year. His last official engagement on Wednesday was a meeting with representatives of Nigerians In Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Europe, led by its Secretary of Education Committee and Project Lead on ICT Empowerment Initiatives, Sakinah Adebola. The team visited to identify partnership opportunities with the Ministry towards developing sustainable digital infrastructure and capacity-building for Nigerians.

This week’s activities align strongly with the Infrastructure Pillar of our Ministry’s Strategic Blueprint, particularly through the advancement of Project BRIDGE, a cornerstone initiative aimed at delivering nationwide fibre connectivity to power Nigeria’s digital future. By engaging both international partners like the Kuwait Fund and local industry leaders such as ATCON, we are laying the foundation for inclusive, affordable, and high-speed internet access across all regions.

Additionally, the unveiling of T2’s rebranded identity reflects the growing dynamism and competitiveness of Nigeria’s telecom sector, an essential component of a thriving digital infrastructure. These efforts are critical to achieving our goal of a digitally connected Nigeria that can fully harness the opportunities of the global digital economy.

Thursday, August 7 – Unveiling the High-Level Design for Project BRIDGE

  • On Thursday, the Honourable Minister unveiled the high-level design for Project BRIDGE at an industry stakeholder event in Lagos organised in partnership with the Association of Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ATCON). At the event, he stated the critical importance of the transformative project to the sustained growth of Nigeria’s digital economy, and highlighted diverse areas in which private sector players can collaborate with the government to unleash its full potential. The session was attended by the President of ATCON, Tony Izuagbe Emoekpe, including rerepresentatives of major Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Data Center Operators, and Internet Exchange Points.

Friday, August 8 – Celebrating Innovation in the Telecom Sector

  • Still in Lagos, he attended the unveiling of the T2 brand, formerly 9mobile. The T2 team, led by Board Chairman, Thomas Etuh and CEO, Obafemi Banigbe, were in his office last week where they briefed the Honourable Minister on the progress of their innovative drive to build the new brand and serve their customers better. The rebirth of T2 is a signal of renewed investor confidence, stronger competition, and a sector ready to deliver even more innovation, inclusion, and prosperity.
