The Honourable Minister later challenged the partners to deepen collaboration and scale impact by building robust communities that strengthen Nigeria’s AI absorptive capacity.

Wednesday, January 28 – Advancing data protection and strategic partnerships

  • To commemorate this year’s Global Privacy Day, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) organised a press conference geared at deepening awareness of data protection and privacy across Nigeria. In his remarks at the event, Dr. Tijani commended the leadership of the agency for setting standards aligned with international best practices while effectively addressing Nigeria’s unique digital and socio-economic context. He was later presented with the National Data Privacy Champion award for his contribution toward advancing data protection and privacy in Nigeria.
  • Following the event, he received the new Swedish Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E Anna Westerholm, who was accompanied by Marlena Batist Hager, Swedish Trade Commissioner to Nigeria and Fredrik Ahberg, Head of Political and Trade Affairs Section, Swedish Embassy. During the visit, both parties reflected on the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and Sweden, and restated their commitment to work together to unlock opportunities and build a digital economy that delivers inclusive growth for our people.
  • Next was a meeting with Ralph Mupita, President/CEO, MTN Group; Karl Toriola, CEO, MTN Nigeria, and other MTN executives. Following their conversations, there was a clear alignment among all parties on the need to improve quality of service for Nigerians, while also ensuring the long-term sustainability of the telecoms industry.
