Back to About Us > Nigeria Secures €45 Million European Union Digital Economy Package to Accelerate Digital Transformation
Nigeria has secured a €45 million European Union (EU) Digital Economy Package, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey. The comprehensive package, which was signed on Tuesday in Brussels, Belgium, by Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister of Communication, Innovation & Digital Economy, and Jozef Síkela, European Union (EU) Commissioner for International Partnerships, is designed to strengthen multiple pillars of Nigeria’s digital transition, including secure connectivity, digital infrastructure, e-Governance and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), digital entrepreneurship, and advanced digital skills development. The investment reflects growing international confidence in Nigeria’s reform agenda and its ambition to build a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready digital economy.
The Digital Economy Package was unveiled during the EU–Nigeria Digital Open Day in Brussels, where Nigerian and European stakeholders engaged on shared priorities shaping the partnership. Discussions focused on secure connectivity and infrastructure rollouts, digital public services and interoperability, digital skills and jobs — including Nigeria’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme — digital trade, and innovation ecosystems. The engagements highlighted concrete pathways for collaboration, private-sector participation, and long-term investment across the digital value chain.
Reacting to the announcement, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, said the investment represents a strong alignment between Nigeria’s national priorities and global digital development efforts. “This €45 million Digital Economy Package is not just an investment in infrastructure or systems; it is an investment in people, skills, and institutions. It strengthens our ability to deliver inclusive digital public services, build globally competitive talent through initiatives like 3MTT, and create the enabling environment for innovation and enterprise to thrive across Nigeria,” the Minister said.
“This investment will bring more jobs, stronger digital skills and secure, high-quality connectivity and will also create new opportunities for European companies offering trusted technologies,” Jozef Síkela, the European Union Commissioner for International Partnerships.
Speaking on the partnership, the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, described the €45 million package as part of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, aimed at supporting sustainable, inclusive, and human-centred digital transformation. He noted that the initiative is designed to create jobs, unlock economic opportunities, and place young people at the centre of Nigeria’s digital future, while promoting trusted connectivity, data protection, and open digital standards.
The EU support will complement Nigeria’s ongoing digital transformation initiatives, including large-scale connectivity programmes such as Project BRIDGE, reforms in digital public service delivery, and efforts to deepen innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems nationwide. By addressing both infrastructure and human capital development, the package is expected to accelerate broadband expansion, improve service efficiency, and unlock new opportunities for Nigerian businesses and young innovators.
Overall, the €45 million EU–Nigeria Digital Economy Package reinforces the enormous potential of the EU–Nigeria digital transition partnership as a key anchor for Global Gateway investment in Africa. It positions Nigeria as a strategic hub for digital infrastructure, talent development, and innovation in West Africa, while advancing shared goals of economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development in an increasingly digital global economy.
