Back to About Us > Honourable Minister, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani Unveils Digital Village with Free Internet for Abuja Community
The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy today unveiled the Innovation Village in the Ibwa 2 community of Kura, Gwagwalada Area Council, as part of its ongoing drive to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide. This landmark pilot project delivers free public Wi-Fi, e-learning tools, and telemedicine services to a population of over 12,000 residents, transforming the rural settlement into a digitally empowered hub.
The Innovation Village was launched in partnership with Huawei Nigeria, Glo, and the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF). Equipped with solar-powered connectivity kits, the site offers 100 Mbps broadband capacity, Huawei IdeaHub-enabled classrooms, and a fully digitized health centre. These features provide students with remote learning opportunities and enable local clinics to consult with global medical professionals—key elements in fostering inclusive socio-economic development.
“Today, we answer President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s call for universal digital access,” said Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy. “By bringing connectivity, education, and healthcare to Kura, we are laying the foundation for a future where no Nigerian is left offline or underserved.”
The Innovation Village pilot also incorporates community training sessions on digital literacy and device maintenance, ensuring local ownership and sustainability. Youth leaders have been engaged to manage on-site digital labs, while partnerships with local artisans guarantee that future infrastructure expansions will employ homegrown talent and materials. These measures reinforce the Ministry’s commitment to building resilient ecosystems that endure beyond initial deployment.
Following today’s launch, the Ministry will evaluate performance metrics over the next quarter before scaling the Innovation Village model to additional rural communities. This initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s goal of positioning Nigeria as a $1 trillion digital economy—one village at a time.
