The Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, has been appointed as a Founding Member of the newly launched AI for Good Global Commission, a high-level international body convened by the International Telecommunication Union to advance trusted, inclusive and globally coordinated approaches to Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The Commission is co-chaired by H.E President Paul Kagame and internet entrepreneur and philanthropist, Marc Benioff, with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin serving as Vice-Chair. Bringing together more than 40 Heads of State and Government, ministers, chief executives, leaders of international organisations and global technology pioneers, the Commission will help shape practical pathways to strengthen trust and accelerate AI’s positive impact worldwide.

Dr. Tijani’s appointment reflects Nigeria’s growing leadership in global conversations on digital transformation and Artificial Intelligence, as well as the country’s commitment to ensuring that emerging technologies contribute meaningfully to sustainable development and inclusive economic growth. As a member of the Commission, the Honourable Minister will contribute Nigeria’s experience in developing responsible AI policies, investing in talent development, and building an innovation ecosystem that enables AI to solve real-world challenges across Africa and beyond.

Speaking on his appointment, Dr. Tijani said: “It is a privilege to join the AI for Good Global Commission at such a defining moment for the future of Artificial Intelligence. As AI reshapes economies and societies, we must ensure that its benefits are accessible to all countries and all people. Nigeria is committed to working with global partners to build AI ecosystems that are trusted, inclusive, and capable of driving innovation, creating opportunities for our young people, and accelerating sustainable development globally.”

Announcing the Commission, ITU Secretary-General and Vice-Chair of the Commission, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, emphasised the importance of collective leadership in shaping the future of AI. She noted that “AI is quickly redefining how economies function and societies evolve. The opportunities are extraordinary, but so are the challenges of building trust and closing widening gaps. We’re going to need all hands on deck to ensure AI benefits all people.” She added that the Commission brings together “a unique set of visionaries, each with the reach, credibility and ambition to scale our efforts globally,” building on the successful collaborative model established by the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development.

The AI for Good Global Commission will hold its inaugural meeting during the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, where members will begin shaping a shared global agenda for responsible AI development, governance, investment and deployment. The Commission seeks to bridge the gap between governments, industry, academia and international organisations, ensuring that AI advances in ways that are safe and responsive to the needs of developed and developing countries alike.

Dr. Tijani’s appointment further reinforces Nigeria’s growing influence in shaping the global future of AI and digital innovation. Under his leadership, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy is implementing bold initiatives to expand digital infrastructure, deepen digital skills, strengthen AI and innovation ecosystems, accelerate the adoption of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), and unlock opportunities for businesses and citizens alike. These efforts form a critical part of the Federal Government’s strategy to accelerate Nigeria’s digital economy and support H.E President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s vision of building a $1trillion economy driven by innovation, productivity, and inclusive growth.

“It is a privilege to join the AI for Good Global Commission at such a defining moment for the future of Artificial Intelligence.
