Back to About Us > Federal Government Launches National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System
The Federal Government has launched Nigeria’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, a nationwide digital addressing infrastructure designed to give every addressable building in the country a unique, precise and verifiable digital location identity.
The system, launched through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), uses Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to provide an 11-character alphanumeric postcode for homes, businesses, farms, schools, offices and other addressable locations across Nigeria. The system is designed to strengthen the country’s addressing infrastructure and support applications across commerce, logistics, emergency response, financial services and public service delivery.
Announcing the launch, the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, described the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System as an important foundation for expanding access to opportunity and strengthening Nigeria’s digital economy.
“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity. Today, we are launching the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System by NIPOST, a significant step towards a Nigeria where your location connects you to more possibilities.
“Think of the small business ready to deliver beyond its neighbourhood, the family waiting for emergency help and the community that government needs to reach with essential services. An accurate postcode can make a meaningful difference in each of these lives.
“As we work towards H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambition for a $1 trillion economy, we must build the foundations that allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper. This is one of those foundations, and I am deeply excited about what we can build with it.”
Dr. Tijani noted that accurate location data will help address longstanding challenges associated with identifying and reaching people, businesses and communities, with potential applications spanning e-commerce, last-mile delivery, emergency response and the delivery of essential public services. The system is also expected to provide a reliable location layer that can be integrated into digital platforms and services.
The Postmaster General/CEO of NIPOST, Engr. Tola Odeyemi, described the launch as a significant transformation in how locations are identified and accessed across Nigeria.
“Everyone in Nigeria has a location. Now every location has a postcode.
“For generations, Nigerians have given directions instead of addresses: ‘after the mosque,’ ‘opposite the big mango tree.’ Parcels get lost, emergency services lose precious minutes, and businesses can’t reach customers.
“The new system gives every home, shop, farm, school and office a precise, digital alphanumeric postcode, mapped and managed from our new NIPOST GIS lab.
“This is more than mail. A precise address is the foundation for e-commerce and last-mile delivery, emergency response, access to banking and credit, and better planning of public services.”
Engr. Odeyemi said the initiative represents national infrastructure built by Nigerians for Nigerians, and expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support under the Renewed Hope Agenda, as well as to the Honourable Minister, the NIPOST team, partners and stakeholders who contributed to the development of the system.
The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System will provide a common, machine-readable location reference that can support businesses, government institutions and technology platforms in identifying and reaching specific locations more accurately. Its applications are expected to extend beyond traditional postal services to areas including logistics, e-commerce, emergency response, financial services, infrastructure planning and public administration.
The Federal Government is encouraging individuals, businesses and organisations across the country to find and begin using their postcodes as part of everyday transactions and operations. Nigerians can find their postcode through postcode.gov.ng and are encouraged to share it with family, friends, customers and community members.
The launch of the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System marks a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure and building the location intelligence required for a more connected, accessible and digitally enabled economy.
