This past week marked another milestone in Nigeria’s growing influence in global digital policy and innovation. From Dr. Tijani’s election as Vice Chair of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council 2025 in Geneva to his keynote address delivered at the United Nations Open Source Week in New York, the Honourable Minister continued to strengthen Nigeria’s leadership role in the advancement of inclusive, people-centered technology.

These engagements provided an opportunity to shape conversations around resilient digital infrastructure, digital public goods, and trust-enabling technologies. As always, Nigeria’s participation was rooted in the achievement of strategic priorities, and this 90th edition of Week in Review captures key highlights from a week of global collaboration and diplomacy.

Tuesday, June 17 – Elected Vice Chair of the ITU Council 2025

• On Tuesday, the Honourable Minister attended the 2025 session of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council in Geneva, Switzerland where he was elected Vice Chair of the ITU Council 2025. In the new role, he plans to champion global collaboration around resilient infrastructure, meaningful access, digital literacy, cybersecurity, and trusted digital public infrastructure — building on the progress Nigeria is already making in helping to shape digital policies that truly empower people everywhere and accelerating the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.

Wednesday, June 18 – Engagement with Nigerian Delegation in Geneva

• While in Geneva, he met with the Nigerian delegation led by Adeladan Rafiu Olarinre, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy; Sunday Eyo Edem, Chargé d’Affaires, Nigerian Permanent Mission in Geneva, representatives of the Ministry and Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The objective of the meeting was to ensure coordinated and effective representation of Nigeria at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council 2025.

Thursday, June 19 – DPI Day at UN Open Source Week

• Dr. Tijani travelled from Geneva to New York to attend the United Nations Open Source Week 2025 Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Day where he delivered a keynote address. In his address at the DPI Day, which was co-hosted by Nigeria and the Dominican Republic, he spoke on what he believes to be one of the most important responsibilities of modern governments, which is using technology not just to digitise services, but to rebuild trust. DPI is key to our vision of a responsive government — one that uses digital tools to foster inclusion, enhance transparency, and deliver impact at scale. Following this, the Honourable Minister met with Amandeep Gill, Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy for Digital and Emerging Technologies, United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies, to further discuss the set up of an African DPI council following earlier discussions at the Global Artificial Intelligence Summit on Africa in Kigali earlier this year.
