The Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, has been elected Vice Chair of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council 2025 during the Council’s session held in Geneva, Switzerland. This historic appointment places Nigeria at the forefront of global digital policy and governance at a time when international collaboration is critical to bridging the digital divide.
Dr. Tijani’s election was announced following a vote of confidence by ITU Member States and was accompanied by widespread support from the international digital community. In his acceptance, the Honourable Minister expressed gratitude to the ITU Secretary-General, Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the Deputy Secretary-General, Mr. Tomas Lamanauskas, and Council members for their trust. He also congratulated Chairperson Ms. Cristiana Flutur of Romania, pledging to work closely with her in service of the Union’s shared goals.
“This is a defining moment in the evolution of global digital development,” Dr. Tijani stated. “As Vice Chair, I will prioritise resilient and sustainable digital infrastructure, access to meaningful connectivity, digital skills and literacy, cybersecurity and online safety, and trust in digital public infrastructure — all of which are critical to ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital revolution.”
The Minister’s new role complements his national mandate under H.E President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to transform Nigeria into a digitally inclusive and innovation-driven economy. From deploying connectivity in underserved communities to launching large-scale technical training programmes and advancing digital public infrastructure, Dr. Tijani’s leadership reflects Nigeria’s commitment to shaping digital transformation that delivers real impact.
The ITU Council serves as the governing body of the Union between Plenipotentiary Conferences, guiding its policies and strategic direction. Dr. Tijani’s election reinforces Nigeria’s growing influence in global technology diplomacy and affirms its readiness to contribute meaningfully to the future of inclusive innovation.
