Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani has been appointed as Co-Chair of the newly formed International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Advisory Body for Submarine Cable Resilience.
Dr. Tijani will lead the Body alongside Prof. Sandra Maximiano, Chair of Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM) Board of Directors.
The International Advisory Body aims to promote dialogue and collaboration on potential ways and means to improve resilience of submarine cables powering global communications and the digital economy. It will serve as a platform for international multi-stakeholder collaboration, bringing together governments, regulatory authorities, industry leaders, and key stakeholders in areas related to enhancing the safety, redundancy, and protection of submarine cables.
The primary role of the International Advisory Body will include:
Speaking on his appointment, the Honourable Minister expressed his appreciation for trust placed in him to lead the International Advisory Body saying: “I am deeply honoured to take on this role at such a crucial time. Submarine cables are the unseen lifelines of our digital world, and their protection is not just a technical matter—it’s essential for global stability and progress. I look forward to collaborating my Co-Chair and international partners to ensure that this critical infrastructure remains resilient and secure for generations to come”.

Dr. Tijani’s appointment underscores his active advocacy towards ensuring resilience in the global digital infrastructure, particularly with respect to subsea fibre-optic cables, which is an area Nigeria is particularly invested in, considering our recent challenges with cuts to our fibre-optic network. His appointment highlights Nigeria’s growing leadership in global digital policy and infrastructure development.
The International Advisory Body for Submarine Cable Resilience will begin its two-year mandate on November 1, 2024, and is expected to make significant contributions to the security of the world’s digital networks.
